Find a Voice
Supports Children and Adults with Communication Difficulties.
We Aim to Help Them Literally
'Find A Voice'
We provide on-line information to everyone in the UK and personal support to individuals, their carers and professionals who live in Kent and Medway.
Well over a million people in the UK today have some kind of
speech difficulty and about half a million of those have significant problems in speaking and communicating.
Communication needs can be caused by many disabilities including
cerebral palsy, Down's Syndrome, global dyspraxia, autistic
spectrum disorders.
Difficulties can also arise at any stage
of life following head injuries, laryngetomy, strokes or the
onset of Multiple Sclerosis or Motor Neurone Disease.

BERCOW REVIEW
The review is the first major review in seven years for people with speech, language and communication needs and provides an excellent opportunity to boost support for vulnerable children and young adults.
I am determined, with the help of expert advisors to see and hear for myself,as to how we can make significant improvements to the support services available.
Since the review's launch in September 2007,
evidence has been gathered from a wide range of resources:
- October 2007,consultation questionaire was launched and there was a huge response:over 2000,including nearly 1000 from families, bythe January 2008 deadline.
- A series of consultation groups were held,to hear views-eg.young offenders' communication problems and for those people who need Alternative and Augmentative Communication Aids, for self expression. We also heared from consultation groups, from parents, children and young people, from all around the country, including focus groups led by Sue Roulstone and Anne Ayre, from the Speech and Language Therapy Research Unit.
- Visits were made to:Children's Centres,Nurseries,Primary and Secondary Schools, throughout the length and breadth of the country. In the process,we met many young people with their parents, teachers, special needs coordinators, classroom assistants, speech and language therapists, including Primary Care Trust and local authority staff.
- The Review's interim report has now been published-setting out our initial findings and areas for further consideration.
- Between now and July, the Review's final report will be published, when we will consider key issues raised and how best they can be addressed and the form of the recommendations we will make to the Government.
I am very grateful to everyone who has taken time to contribute to the Review.
